Man Arrested for Gun, Drug Possession

On Saturday, April 24, at approximately 12:00 noon, a City of Poughkeepsie Police officer observed a drug transaction in the area of 120 Hudson Avenue. One of the subjects involved left the area in a vehicle and the officer conducted a traffic stop, finding a quantity of what appeared to be crack cocaine. The driver fled the area on foot and was taken in to custody after a foot pursuit. Also found in the vehicle was a loaded handgun that had been reported stolen from the state of Florida. The defendant, Omari D. Hasan, 25, of Brooklyn, was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree, felonies. He was also charged with criminal impersonation, resisting arrest and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, misdemeanors, as well as a marijuana violation. Hasan was also found to be wanted on a felony warrant from New York City. He was held pending arraignment.


Traffic Stop Leads to Gun Arrest

On Sunday, April 25, shortly after midnight, City of Poughkeepsie Police officers conducted a traffic stop at the end of Laurel Street. The operator of the vehicle abandoned the car, which struck a building, and fled the area on foot. He was located a short time later and was placed under arrest on numerous vehicle and traffic charges. A loaded handgun was recovered during the investigation and the defendant, Kenneth A. Paddyfote III, 25, of Poughkeepsie, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a felony, and unlawful fleeing of a police officer, a misdemeanor. He was also issued 15 traffic tickets. He was held pending arraignment.

Man charged with two robberies

The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to the area of 216 North Hamilton St. after an observant citizen reported a man wearing a ski mask in the area to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office at 150 North Hamilton St.  While Officers were responding to the area to investigate a hold up alarm activation was received from the Hamilton Book and Video store located at 216 North Hamilton St.   Responding Officer’s learned that an armed robbery had just occurred and the suspect was arrested a short distance away at 108 Parker Ave.  The weapon used was recovered as well. 

 

The suspect is Donald Hodges of the City of Poughkeepsie.  Hodges was charged with Robbery 2nd for this robbery and he was also charged with Robbery 1st for a second armed robbery of the same book store on March 26, 2010.

Teens Charged in Robbery

Two juveniles were arrested this morning after forcibly stealing a cell phone from a man while in the area of 2 Charles Street. A description of the suspects was broadcast on police radio and two young teenagers were stopped by officers and positively identified by the victim. They are 13 and 14 years old and may be eligible for youthful offender status.

Handgun Found on Lent Street

At 12:47 a.m. on Tuesday, May 25, City of Poughkeepsie Police Officers responded to the area of Lent Street for a report of shots fired. A handgun was found on the ground at the scene and a 32-year-old man was arrested for unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. There were no injuries.

Beacon Man Had Illegal Guns

On May 26 at approximately 9:18 p.m., City of Poughkeepsie Police Officers were checking the vacant YMCA property at 35 Montgomery St. when they observed a subject in the parking lot. The officers interviewed the subject who admitted to possessing two illegal handguns, both of which were loaded.

Daquon A. Spence, 19, of Beacon, was taken in to custody without incident. He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of stolen property, felonies.

Scam Donations Sought for King Street Park

A resident of Musselman Drive in the Town of Poughkeepsie has advised the city that someone was collecting donations for King Street Park. No one is collecting funds for the park, so any such solicitations should be considered a scam and reported to the police.

Murder Suspect Arrested

    On June 24, 2010 Kareem Porter was fatally stabbed in the area of 435 Main Street in the City of Poughkeepsie. On July 12, 2010 VAUGHN STOKES a 29 year old City of Poughkeepsie resident was arrested by members of the New York State Police Violent Felony Warrant Squad and Detectives from the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department at a motel on Gun Hill Rd in the Bronx for his part in Porters’s murder. STOKES was assaulting Porter at the time he was fatally stabbed. STOKES was charged with Murder in the 2nd degree. Additionally STOKES was found to be in Possession of 8 handguns and 1 fully automatic weapon for which he will also face charges. STOKES was arraigned in City Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail.
 
    At this time the City of Poughkeepsie Police are looking for DONAVAN GILLIARD, a 30 year old City of Poughkeepsie resident who is wanted for stabbing Porter. GILLIARD is 5’10 tall, 167 lbs, black hair, bro eyes. GILLAIRD may be with his wife TENEQUA GILLIARD a 28 year old City of Poughkeepsie resident who is wanted on an Arrest Warrant for a City Ordinance violation. Attempted Home Invasion on Delafield St.

City of Poughkeepsie Police are investigating an attempted home invasion that occurred on Delafield Street shortly after midnight on Wednesday. An unknown male subject who identified himself as "Tate" knocked on the rear door of an apartment. When the residents looked outside they observed four males all wearing masks and gloves, one of them armed with rifle. The suspects fled on foot toward Hoffman Street after an exterior motion light was activated. This is the second time in the past two weeks that this type of incident has occurred at this address. The first incident was not reported to police.

One suspect is described as a dark-skinned black male, 5'6" with a slightly heavy build and glasses. A second suspect was described as 5'8" with a thinner build and a third suspect was described as being 5'8" to 5'10".

Man Arrested for Vehicle Break-in

On Thursday, Oct. 7 at 12:57 a.m., City of Poughkeepsie Police Officers responded to a report of an Hispanic male who had just broken in to a vehicle in an Academy Street parking lot. The alert citizen who called the police provided a very good description of the suspect and someone matching that description was stopped and detained by officers on Church Street after exiting the Academy Street lot.

The suspect had fresh blood on his hand. A check of the parking lot revealed a vehicle matching that as described by the caller that had been forcibly entered. A blood sample was obtained from within the vehicle. The vehicle’s owner positively identified property on the person of the suspect as property taken from the vehicle. Arrested on charges of criminal mischief, larceny and criminal possession of stolen property was Pedro Lopez, 31, homeless.

City of Poughkeepsie Police remind residents not to leave valuables in their vehicles and to call (845) 451-4000 when they observe suspicious persons or activities.

15 year old male arrested for breaking into a vehicle

On October 24, 2010 at approximately 11:54 AM the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to the area of 53 South Hamilton St. after a witness reported seeing a 15 year old black male break a window out of a parked vehicle.  The suspect then took several items from inside of  the vehicle and fled on a bicycle.  Responding Patrol Officers located the suspect and he was positively identified and arrested.  All of the victims property was recovered.  

The suspect is a 15 year old City of Poughkeepsie resident.  He was released to a parent to appear at later time in Dutchess County Family Court. 

The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department strongly urges you not to leave items included but not limited to GPS devices, MP3 players and other valuables in your vehicle as there has been a recent increase in vehicles being broken into on the western side of the City. 

Suspicious Male in Area of Adriance Ave.

City of Poughkeepsie Police are attempting to identify a man who was observed looking into to parked vehicles in the area of Adriance and Hooker avenues.

On Oct. 28, at approximately 10:15 p.m., an alert citizen called police headquarters reporting the suspicious male who was described as being black, 6' tall, wearing thick eye glasses, blue jeans and a long winter type coat with a panel on the front. The same subject was observed a few days earlier on Whitehouse Avenue at around 1:30 a.m.

Man Arrested for Illegal Gun

On Nov. 5, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Christian Blades was stopped by City of Poughkeepsie Police Officers in the area of Main Street and South Clinton Street. He was found to be in possession of a loaded semi-automatic handgun with a defaced serial number. Blades, 17, of State Street, was charged with second and third degree criminal possession of a weapon, felonies, and was held pending arraignment.

Barbershop Robbed

At approximately 4:43 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10, an armed robbery was reported at VR&R Barbershop at 133 Washington St.

One suspect is described as being a Hispanic or light-skinned black male, 5’8” – 5’9”, wearing a gray sweatshirt, jeans and a mask.  The second suspect, described as a taller black male wearing a gray sweat suit, served as a lookout. Following the robbery, one suspect fled north on Washington Street and other fled south on Washington Street.

Police Investigating Home Invasion

A home invasion robbery occurred at 9 Hooker Ave. on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at approximately 6:40 p.m. The suspects are described as a white male wearing a black jacket and white hooded sweatshirt and a black male, possibly with dreadlocks and wearing a hooded sweatshirt. The suspects stole a safe and fled in a newer Ford Expedition or similar SUV, which was black or dark navy with no front plate. The rear plate was the newer style blue and gold plate. A third suspect, possibly a white male, was operating the vehicle, which fled west on Hooker Avenue. Prior to the robbery, the vehicle was parked on the north side of Hooker Avenue, east of 9 Hooker Ave.

Three Handguns Recovered by Police

In two separate incidents, three handguns were recovered by City of Poughkeepsie Police officers in a 24-hours period.

On Nov. 18 at 3:26 a.m., officers on foot patrol in the area of 411 Main Street heard several gun shots. An investigation indicated that numerous subjects had fled the area. While checking the various flight paths of these subjects, the officers located a .38 caliber handgun near a parking lot on North Hamilton Street. At this time, investigation is continuing as to the source of the weapon and who may have discarded it.

On Nov. 18 at 8:58 p.m., a joint warrant detail comprised of Detectives, patrol officers and members of the Neighborhood Recovery Unit went to 6 Mansion St. in search of subjects wanted on several warrants. While entering the common hallway of the building, officers on the perimeter indicated that several subjects were attempting to flee out of upper floor windows.

After an investigation, two subjects were taken into custody and two handguns (.44 caliber and .32 caliber revolvers) were recovered from a roof where they had been discarded. The City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department assisted in recovering the weapons, both of which were reported stolen. One was stolen from Chenango County and the other from Kingston.

Arrested were Maurice Eady, 18, and Frederick Smith, 20, each on two counts of criminal possession of stolen property, a felony. Eady was also charged with two counts of fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor. Smith was also charged with second degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, and fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Man Had Burglary Tools

An alert citizen living on Fox Terrace reported to police at 9:00 a.m. this morning that someone with a crowbar was on the property of a vacant house. Officers located the subject, Raymond Wright, 55, in possession of a crowbar and other burglar’s tools. He was also in possession of two large metal garden ornaments, which may have been stolen. Wright was charged with possession of burglar’s tools, a misdemeanor. Police were unable to determine the owner of the vacant house but it did not appear to have been entered.

At approximately 9:15 p.m. on Nov. 22, a man was robbed at gunpoint by two males and a female in the area of Bement Avenue and Harrison Street. One of the three suspects was known to the victim and turned himself in to City of Poughkeepsie Police. Carlton Woods, 40, homeless, was charged with first degree robbery. The other suspects have yet to be identified. They are described as a black female wearing dark clothing and a black male, 5'11" tall with a thin build also wearing dark clothing.

Car Stolen From Driveway

On Friday, Nov. 26, at 5:52 a.m. City of Poughkeepsie Police dispatchers received a call from a woman who reported that her car, which had been left running in her driveway, was stolen by unknown man.

 

A police officer dispatched to the call observed the stolen vehicle and attempted to stop it. A chase ensued and the responding officer was involved in an accident with the stolen vehicle in the area of 27 Vernon Terr. As the officer’s car turned onto Vernon Terrace, the stolen vehicle came straight at him and struck him. The officer suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.

 

The operator of the stolen vehicle was identified as Roger Reeves, 53, homeless. He was charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer, assault in the second degree, criminal mischief in the fourth degree, criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree, resisting arrest and reckless endangerment.

 

City police remind residents not to leave their vehicles running while unattended.
