City Man Shot to Death on Mill Street

At 12:36 p.m. this date, City of Poughkeepsie Police responded to a report of a man shot in front of 195 Mill Street at the corner of North Bridge and Mill. Responding officers found 27-year-old City of Poughkeepsie resident Shanta Gaines laying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Gaines was transported to St. Francis Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:15 p.m.  

 

After an investigation, Detectives arrested Daryl Rogers Jr., 24, inside an apartment on Charles Street at 4:31 p.m. Rogers, a resident of the City of Poughkeepsie, has been charged with second degree murder. A firearm was recovered at the scene of the arrest.

Man Charged With Gun Possession

On May 1, 2009 Dutchess County Probation and the New York State Police Violent Felony Warrant Squard arrested Kenyatta Jackson (DOB 8/12/90) at the Tubman Terrace Apartments on a Dutchess County Probation warrant. During his arrest, Jackson was found to be in possession of a defaced 380 caliber handgun. Johnson was arraigned on felony charges of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree criminal possession of a defaced weapon. He was remanded to Dutchess County Jail.

Police: Man Had Loaded Gun

City of Poughkeepsie Police arrested a man for illegally possessing a loaded handgun on Tuesday, April 28.

Shortly before midnight, a passerby reported that a man on Main Street was carrying a gun. Responding officers found a man matching the caller’s description about a block away from the said location, in possession of a loaded handgun.

The man, Maurice Jefferson, 22, of the City of Poughkeepsie, was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class C felony.

Jefferson was arraigned on Wednesday at city court and remanded to Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail, cash or bond.

Three Charged With Felony Marijuana Possession

On Friday May 1, 2009 a joint investigation conducted by members of the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department Neighborhood Recovery Unit and the United States Postal Service resulted in the arrests of three subjects for criminal possession of marihuana in the first degree, a Class C felony.

 

The first investigation resulted in the seizure of 22 lbs. of marihuana possessed by the following two subjects: York D. Murray (DOB 10-6-1978), last known address of 21 Collegeview Dr., Poughkeepsie; and Garfield A. Smiekle (DOB 3-2-1969), last known address of 216 Church St., Poughkeepsie. Both subjects have been referred to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as their resident status in the United States is unverified. 

 

The second investigation resulted in the seizure of 20 lbs. of marihuana possessed by Kimya E. Bryant (DOB 12-26-1979), last known address of 4 Hoffman Ave., Poughkeepsie.

 

Finally, a third parcel was confiscated and found to contain approximately 15 lbs. of marihuana. The investigation is continuing. The potential “street” value of the marihuana seized is $250,000. 

 

Community members with information regarding drug dealing in their neighborhood are encouraged to contact the City of Poughkeepsie Neighborhood Recovery Unit at 451-4060.

Non-Profit to Conduct Door-to-Door Outreach

The New York Public Interest Research Group Fund, Inc. (NYPIRG) will be conducting door-to-door outreach in the community between May 6 and August 31. The activities will entail circulating support statements, soliciting small contributions, distributing information and recruiting support on a variety of issues of concern to the community.

Three Vehicle Break-ins Over Weekend

There were three vehicle break ins reported to City of Poughkeepsie Police this weekend. They occurred in the overnight hours on South Clover Street, College Avenue and Woodland Avenue. Citizens are reminded to not leave valuables in their vehicles and to secure their vehicles at all times.

Three vehicle break ins were reported to City of Poughkeepsie this morning. One was on South Randolph Street and two were on Ferris Lane. All three incidents occurred sometime over night. Cash was taken in one case and a GPS device was taken in another. All three vehicles were unlocked.

City police remind residents to never leave valuables in their vehicles and to secure their vehicles when unattended.

Man Arrested in Shooting

City of Poughkeepsie Police arrested Eric R. McCormick, 26, of Wingdale, on Monday, May 25 at approximately 11:53 p.m. at a gas station on Route 9 in the Town of Poughkeepsie, charging him with second degree assault and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, felonies, for his role in a shooting here in the city earlier that day. Town of Poughkeepsie Police assisted in the arrest, which occurred without incident.

 

McCormick is charged with shooting a 22-year-old Salt Point male while in the area of 6 Gray Street at approximately 3:09 p.m. The victim was struck in the leg and was treated at a local hospital.

 

McCormick and the victim have a mutual acquaintance who arranged for the victim to give McCormick a ride. The victim drove the suspect to the area of 6 Gray Street where the suspect got out of the victim’s vehicle. The suspect then returned to the victim’s vehicle and attempted to rob him at gunpoint. A struggle ensued and the gun discharged, striking the victim.

 

The victim’s injuries are not considered life threatening.

 

McCormick was held pending arraignment.

Man Charged With Burglary

City of Poughkeepsie Police arrested Jose E. Rodriguez, 39, homeless, shortly before midnight on June 8 on a felony charge of third degree burglary and misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief, criminal possession of stolen property and petit larceny.

 

Rodriguez was in possession of the proceeds from a burglary of a Smith Street business when he was arrested. That burglary had just occurred. He was charged with criminal mischief for attempting to break in to a Mill Street business.

 

He was held pending arraignment.
